Disclaimer: The Power of Narratives

 

Apple Mini-series, 2024 Based on Renée Knight’s bestselling 2015 novel of the same name, Disclaimer is a 2024 psychological thriller drama released on Apple TV+. Written and directed by five-time Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón, the seven-episode mini-series explores the power of truth, narrative, and perspective, as well as the danger of untold secrets. Disclaimer features an acclaimed cast including Cate Blanchett as Catherine Ravenscroft, Sacha Baron Cohen as her husband Robert, Kodi Smit-McPhee as her son Nicholas, Kevin Kline as Stephen Brigstocke, and Lesley Manville as his wife Nancy. The series follows Catherine, a celebrated investigative journalist whose seemingly stable life is disrupted by the arrival of a novel that appears to reveal a deeply personal secret. As the story unfolds through multiple perspectives, it explores themes of memory, identity, perception, and the often-fragile relationship between truth and narrative. Throughout the series, we witness each character building a story that makes their world intelligible, and gradually becoming attached to them to stabilize their identities. While Catherine, Robert, and Stephen interpret the same events through their own worldviews, experiences, and personal insecurities, the series reveals how memory, guilt, grief, and the need for recognition shape their understanding of themselves and others. Although Disclaimer is not explicitly about international relations, its exploration of identity, competing narratives, and the psychological consequences of uncertainty offers valuable insights for political psychology. The series illustrates how individuals interpret ambiguous events and construct coherent understandings of themselves and others when confronted with events that challenge their identities. It therefore provides a useful lens for examining broader questions about identity formation, perception, and the psychological foundations of social and political behavior. Rather than presenting identity as fixed or truth as straightforward, Disclaimer highlights how individuals cling to narratives that preserve continuity and meaning, making it a compelling exploration of the relationship between identity, perception, and existential insecurity. Importantly, Catherine’s greatest threat is not legal punishment but exposure, which creates existential anxiety and shame. Public revelation destabilizes her carefully maintained routines, illustrating how ontological insecurity often emerges through threats to identity rather than to physical survival. Stephen, on the other hand, refuses to recognize Catherine as a complex person and instead reduces her to the villain necessary for preserving his identity as a grieving father. In this sense, the series illustrates how emotions such as grief, guilt, anger, and humiliation serve as mechanisms for stabilizing identities. The series also demonstrates that memory is shaped through emotional needs and that competing narratives become more important than objective facts because they preserve characters’ ontological security. As director Cuarón explained in an interview, the use of different narrators and perspectives is deeply integral to the understanding of the story: “Thematically, I was very intrigued about how a narrative completely affects our understanding of facts and understanding of stories. I mean, from a psychological standpoint, the effect that secrets have — and by secrets, I’m talking about our own past — when we bury away the past, the past finds its way. It finds its way in your personal relationships but also in your own persona and in your own stability. And that applies also not only to the individual, but societies at large.” Similarly, the series’ trailer warns: “Beware of narrative and form. Their power can bring us closer to the truth, but, because of our own deeply held beliefs and the judgments that we make, they can also be a weapon with a great power to manipulate.” Disclaimer ultimately suggests that the line between truth and narrative is rarely as stable as we would like to believe. Each character’s story is shaped less by what actually happened and more by what these characters need to believe about themselves to maintain a coherent understanding of their Self. For political psychology, this offers a useful reminder: the narratives that individuals, groups, and even nations construct around ambiguous or threatening events are rarely neutral accounts of fact. They are, instead, attempts to protect identity and manage anxiety in the face of uncertainty. Disclaimer’s power lies in showing this process at the intimate, personal level, offering a lens that scales surprisingly well to the political.
